DERWENT — An estimated $5.5 million construction and renovation project is underway at Bi-Con Service’s campus on Clay Pike Road in Derwent.
Crews are relocating utility lines to pave the way for a new two-story, 15,000-square-foot office building behind the current building. The project will also include renovations to the current two-story building with similar square footage.
The two buildings will be joined by a 9,000-foot atrium-style connector.
“The new addition will add nearly 90 new offices and numerous conference areas and collaborative working spaces,” said Bi-Con President Denny Patterson. “The second phase of construction will include modernizing the existing work areas.
“When it is finished, we will add about as many offices as we have now,” Patterson added.
The current Bi-Con office building houses approximately 100 employees.
“This will allow for growth across the entire business,” said Patterson.
Once the project is complete, Bi-Con will be able to add more skilled positions such as engineers, drafters, designers and project managers. The company will also need to hire more managers and laborers on the construction side of the business.
“A lot of the positions will be two-year and four-year degree jobs,” said Patterson. “But, we will also add other positions. It is company-wide growth.”
The exact number of new hires has yet to be determined.
Construction on the new building is scheduled to begin in mid-June following site preparation work. The estimated completion date is summer of 2022.
“The new addition will help position us for growth now and into the future at Bi-Con Engineering and Bi-Con Construction,” said Patterson. “This will also provide an opportunity for our employees to grow.”
Bi-Con previously constructed a 30,000-square-foot blast and paint building several years ago and a new maintenance facility last year.
“In 2019, we celebrated 60 years of business,” said Patterson. “With this investment and the many others, we continue to build the foundation for the next 60 years. This growth will allow us to continue providing services to our customers.”
Bi-Con has worked with Design Collective and Illes Architects during the planning stage for the project. The construction work will primarily be completed in-house by Bi-Con employees, according to Patterson.
The final design addressing office space and privacy issues for employees are in the final planning stages. The office space will be a mixture of cubicles and closed rooms along with meeting rooms.
Patterson said Kyle Bates will serve as project manager.
The original Bi-Con office building was constructed in 1983 with the two-story addition completed in 1994.
Bi-Con has helped energy suppliers and manufacturing companies compete in the global marketplace since 1959.
The key to Bi-Con’s success and growth are the operating groups — construction, electrical, manufacturing and design-build. The operating groups work together or independently to develop, engineer, manufacture and manage customer projects.
