PEORIA (HOI) — A $12 million construction project on Western Avenue is affecting local businesses.

Many businesses along Western Avenue are only reachable via side streets. Some are using back or side doors as primary entrances since front entrances are inaccessible.

One owner said business is down somewhere between 20 and 30 percent.

Peoria Public Works says they knew this project would create an inconvienence. But Communications Specialist Alex Williams says the payoff will be worth it in the long run.

“In the long run, this is going to have a huge impact on this area and these streets,” Williams said.

Williams added they are doing everything they can to reduce the construction’s impact on local business, including putting up road signs to direct cars to the side streets and periodically checking on the businesses to make sure they are doing well.

“We’ve been working with businesses as much as possible to ensure their customers and their customer bases are able to reach them,” Williams said.

The construction will improve traffic flow along Western Avenue by reducing it from four lanes to three and moving light poles.

Public Works says they are on trace to finish the first phase of the project by the end of this year and hope to complete the it by the end of 2022.
